Architecture for Everyone's 'Our Urban Playground' exhibition opens in Glasgow

Opening in the Level 2 Gallery of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh's iconic Glasgow building The Lighthouse,   Our Urban Playground presents the outcomes of the most recent Architecture for Everyone (A4E) campaign showcasing projects from Birmingham, Glasgow, London, Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield.   Over 125 young people worked with design professionals and focussed on design for sport and leisure facilities within the context of London 2012 Olympic Games and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.  The evening was hosted by Doreen Lawrence OBE and Chair of Architecture and Design Scotland, Karen Anderson.
 
Commenting on the work of A4E campaign and the exhibition, Doreen said, “ The Trust is delighted at the development of the A4E national programme. It is exciting to be discovering talented and aspiring architects and designers from across the UK, and providing them with a unique opportunity to engage with an industry they may otherwise have felt excluded from.”

Mayor Boris Johnson launches Shape Your London competition

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson has expressed his support for a design competition launched in honour of Stephen Lawrence.
 
The Annual Stephen Lawrence Memorial Lecture,  held at the Royal Institute of British Architects  was the launch for the ‘Shape Your London’ design competition and is backed by a package of support from Design for London and the London Development Agency.
 
‘Shape Your London’ is targeted at 16-19 year olds, who have the vision to radically transform their local area for the benefit of the community. Prizes include bursaries for course fees, educational resources and work experience placements. Pledging his support for the competition, the Mayor said: “A diverse workforce leads to a rich vibrant society, and I welcome the efforts of all those involved to effect change within the field of architecture and urban design.”
 
 

 

Apsiring designers win Shanghai Competition

The two winners of the 2010 national Architecture for Everyone competition have been announced. Syed Karim and Andre Reid from Liverpool and Birmingham respectively have won an all expenses paid trip to Shanghai. Whilst there, they will take part in a week’s work placement at RMJM’s Shanghai studio, before joining the Architectural Association’s Summer School at The University of Hong Kong in Shanghai.
 
The runners up were Marwa Derouiche from Manchester and Kayleigh Tse from London. All four young people faced the illustrious judging panel and underwent a vigorous one-to-one interview. This year’s judges were Will Alsop OBE RA of Alsop@RMJM, Doreen Lawrence OBE,  Rory Olcayto,  Deputy Editor of the Architects’ Journal and Alice Asafu-Adjaye, Senior Project Director at Adjaye Associates Architects. The interviews took place at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) headquarters in London.
 
Andre, 19 commenting on winning said: “This is an amazing opportunity. I feel very privileged to be given the opportunity to live my dream by studying in Shanghai.”

Architecture for Everyone participants celebrate end of 2010 workshops

Over 60 participants from Architecture for Everyone London, Sheffield, Liverpool and Manchester joined the Glasgow particpants to  present the results of their work in each city. The trip, which for some was the first time they had visited Scotland, included a private tour of the iconic Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed Glasgow School of Art and a studio session led by tutors from the Mackintosh School of Architecture.  
 
Karen Anderson, Chair of Architecture+Design Scotland said: “Architecture for Everyone is a fantastic opportunity for the young people from across Scotland and the UK to gain a great overview of the design profession, and we in Glasgow are really proud to have been asked to be involved with this programme. We have all been able to produce really rich and exciting workshops because of the excellent level of support we have received from our contributing partners.”
 
Next week sees the start of the final A4E regional workshop programme - a special youth programme at the CABE Urban Design Summer School with MADE (Midlands Architecture and the Design Environment) in Birmingham.
 

Sports and Music celebrities attend 2010 Architecture for Everyone launch event at Channel 4

A host of celebrities inlcuding Olympic Gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu,  Grime artist JME and Channel 4 nominated comedian Eddie Kadi, joined Doreen Lawrence OBE to launch the 2010 Architecture for Everyone campaign.
 
The event, held at Channel 4 in London, featured the premiere of 'Our Urban Playground', a short film made by young people from Deptford, south east London which explored the themes of designing for urban sport and play and the legacy that the 2012 Olympics and 2014 Commonwelth Games will leave for future communities.
 
Speaking at the event,  reigning Olympic gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu MBE is already witnessing the impact the 2012 Games are having on her area: “I grew up and still live in East London, less than a mile away from where they are building the Olympic stadium for the 2012 games in Stratford. The impact of the new buildings and sports facilities in the area can already be felt. There is a feeling of optimism and excitement, which really demonstrates how sport can be a catalyst for hugely positive change within local communities.”
